Scott Gilmore says that Canada is too self-satisfied with the status of its racial progress. I can’t speak to that, though it seems the comparison with the US (and the racial concerns of African-Americans therein) is rather unfair. Michigan State sent out a letter questioning the family decisions of faculty. As in, the decision to choose having a family. My wife has gotten this “talk” twice, actually. (Both times from women, as it happens.) (Childless women, though in one case due to tragedy.)

Yesterday I had a Journeyman plumber come out and check my work for a gas line extension I installed (my birthday present to myself was a new natural gas BBQ, so I had to run a gas line to it). For 1 hour of pretty light labor, I wrote him a check for $135. Now I know he won’t get all of that, but even if he only gets a third of it, he’s making a decent living.

Before my motorcycle wreck, I was contemplating dive school, and had a backup plan of getting my A&P* license. Both of which were challenging but not overly long or expensive programs even in the civilian world, and both could easily result in middle to upper-middle class incomes.

BA/BS degrees are nice, but they are seriously oversold.

My last name is much more common in the African American community. It is also much more common on the east coast. I flew to NYC once, and was picked up by a limo driver (along with about six others.) The driver, who had a sign with my name on it to find me, was not expecting a white man.
