The Obama Administration gives its blessing to a partial Keystone pipeline. This strikes me as cutting the baby in half. Getting oil from Canada was a big part of the point of the whole exercise.

I got a good laugh out of the hunters shooting down the drone.

  2. ScarletKnight says:

No link on the Mobiputing story.

There is something sexy about the girl in the picture. She looks like a girl who was geeky in school and is just learning to dress to accentuate her feminity.

  3. ScarletKnight says:

Ummm, that should be femininity. It looks wrong, but is correct.

The most offensive part of the picture is that there is ketchup on a hot dog. Blasphemy.

  4. trumwill says:

Peter, Yeah, I got a kick out of that one, too.

  5. trumwill says:

    Knight,

Fixed, thanks. Totally agree on the girl in the picture. I don’t know I wouldn’t have put it the way you did, but it really fits.

  6. SFG says:

All right, this is catnip to us nerds. Where’d you get the lady, Trumwill?

I honestly can’t remember where I got the picture from. I liked the whole Girl Posing With Human-size hotdog aspect, though I will confess that I would not have kept the image had it been an ugly girl attached. Though I was not expecting everyone who commented on it (which, to be fair, is only two) to agree with my appraisal of her.

  9. SFG says:

She’s cute enough to look attractive but attainable to us nerds….and the demure look and glasses suggest she might have something in common with us.

For all we know, she’s a C student crazy about her school’s team. Fantasy is a powerful thing.

  10. ScarletKnight says:

Will, did you see comment 3? I am curious what you think are the proper condiments on a hotdog.

SFG: She’s cute enough to look attractive but attainable to us nerds

Correct. If it was a supermodel, we would appreciate it, but know that we had no shot. This girl, we have a shot with.

Her white legs show she couldn’t find the beach with a map.

Also, I have a feeling that she grooms herself to Peter’s liking.

  11. trumwill says:

SFG, have you ever had that experience where you start talking to someone you would swear you could bond with and it turns out that they’re a g’dang normal? Frustrating, frustrating.

  12. ScarletKnight says:

Wow, Will. SFG gets a replay and I don’t?

I will use this cry for attention to mention that I hope to meet girls like her at Dexcon this year. And since I believe in basic hygiene, I think I stand a good chance.

  13. trumwill says:

Dude, what the hell happened to my reply?! I swear I replied to you, man.

I’m afraid I have no strong opinion on ketchup and hot dogs. I’m generally anti-ketchup, though mixed with mustard or mayo and I can go along. Hot dogs are typically bland and often need the help.

The term we used was “approachably attractive” or “attainably attractive.” Right along the lines of what you’re talking about. Made more attractive by perceived (sometimes imagined) accessibility.

    You’re probably right on grooming.

  14. trumwill says:

Regarding Dexcon, proper (or even half-way decent) grooming goes a long way in anime conventions. On the other hand, the last one I went to made me feel… really old (like a dirty old man, actually). I’m not sure how much of this applies to gaming conventions.

  15. SFG says:

My experience is that there are very few girls at gaming conventions, unlike anime or SF cons. This is obviously very dependent on region and likely individual con as well.

  16. SFG says:

And in answer to your other question I didn’t answer, Trumwill: no, but I run in circles with fewer geeks than you. So I’m not expecting it to begin with, I guess.

  17. trumwill says:

I don’t usually get it wrong on the geek front. More on the… “this seems like another bird of rare plumage” sort of thing. Another person that is, if not counterculture (which itself can be problematic), then ambivaculture.
