Watching these old Dennis Hopper videos reminds me of how much I used to care about the NFL and how little I do now. I would say it’s something to do with the NFL, but I think when it comes to sports I am an all-or-nothing sort of guy. When I was a kid, it was baseball at the expense of everything else. Then at some point it became mostly NFL, though at the time I think I had time for both. Then it became college football and there was too much on my plate to spend much thought on the NFL or MLB (or, heaven forfend, the NBA).

NFL is too corporatized and too sissified today. It’s not a sport anymore — it’s a televised cultural ritual.

College ball is where it’s at. 🙂

Maria, what do you think about the rumors of the Pac 10 becoming the Pac 16?

  3. Maria says:

rob: Yeah, my hubby and I were talking about that just the other day. I hate the whole idea of expanding the conference and having a conference championship and play-offs. Seems like it’ll be just like the pros then.

My hubby felt that it would be okay if we got some good teams like Texas in the expansions, and if the Rose Bowl is preserved. But it seems to me the Rose Bowl will be just an afterthought if there’s a conference championship.

That’s my brother Mitch’s take on it, too. I am more or less in favor of the status quo with just a few tweaks, but as far as sweeping changes go this has more potential than a lot of ideas I hear.

What I don’t quite understand is why in the world the Arizona schools would be remotely okay with this. They both lean heavily on California recruits and this would limit them to one game against a major California school per year and only one trip to California (excluding low-profile schools like San Diego State and whatnot) every couple of years. This may help them with Texas recruits, but it’s easier to sell a kid on California on Arizona or ASU than it is kids from Texas.

I’m also a bit confused about Stanford. Stanford is rumored to have blocked A&M a decade ago when Texas and A&M were interested in the Pac 10 and they are rumored to be among the opposition to BYU inclusion on academic grounds… but they’re okay with Texas Tech and Oklahoma State?

Hi will, sorry I called you rob above. Bad reading comprehension skills I guess.

I don’t know what’s up with Stanford either. A couple of years ago they pulled down their old stadium and replaced it with a much smaller one (30,000 fewer seats). They just don’t pull the fans anymore like they used to, although their program has been somewhat revitalized by Harbaugh.

Things are changing for sure in the Pac-10 with the departure of Pete Carroll. Should be a more interesting year. But Cal is not going to benefit from any of the changes. They are masters at snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. My husband just wants a good Texas team in the Pac-10 for spite, so that somebody reliable will be around every season to beat up on USC.

If your team can’t win, the second-best option is to see the team you hate lose.

  6. Maria says:

So damned if they didn’t go and take in Colorado 🙂 At least we are not going to get stuck with Boise State.

The Pac-10 is doomed I tell ya — doomed!
