Antcars are better drivers than people, leading to greater salience behind my hypothetical. On the other hand, maybe technology will improve us to the point of making it moot.

The Dutch is experiencing a crime increase after banning pot sales to foreigners and the problems pot tourism wrought. Meanwhile, Denmark is like Vince Young are not uncommon. I tend to be supportive of the NFL players’ union (in contrast to MLB and NBA), but if they ever wanted my enthusiastic support, it would be in transitioning from boatloads of money up front towards a pension program over a longer period of time.

Android is ramping up 6x faster than the iPhone and has a remarkable 75% market-share. The degree of widespread adoption genuinely surprises me (not that Apple minds, given their profit margins).

Is the solution to climate change going to be adaptation? I’m really starting to suspect that it will be.

Adam Ozimek on the lack of substance behind the criticisms of diet soft drinks. The first comment hits on my objection, which is that there is reason to believe that it might be a contributor to obesity. More.

I previously linked to an article about one-room schools. Here’s another one on the struggle of small schools in West Virginia to keep from being consolidated.

An interesting article from the Washington Post on how our cities are becoming hubs for Mexican drug cartels. I wasn’t aware the extent to which they’d made inroads on the meth market. I didn’t figure there was enough money in it for it to be worth their time.

I suspect it’s because you can get Android phones for cheap on various pre-paid carriers*. In fact, there was a $49 Android phone on sale at Walgreens. In contrast, while iPhones work on prepaid carriers like StraightTalk that use SIM cards, it still requires purchasing the phone at full price new, or used which carries risks with stolen phones. In contrast, there are still plenty of used Android phones floating around.

BTW, do you mind deleting my previous comment in this post? It was meant for another post here.

    *and of course, T-Mobile…

    Meanwhile, Denmark

I suspect that the ban didn’t work given that Denmark is a small country, and the largest city is within a 30 minute train ride or short drive across a kick ass bridge to Sweden. Even the rest of the country isn’t that far away from Germany…

That’s a good point that I hadn’t considered. Can you not get a used iPhone to work on StraightTalk? My understanding is that most of the prepaid carriers will work with the phones of whatever major carrier they are aligned with. My father-in-law got a couple Verizon phones for a prepaid carrier that is not Verizon but is linked to their networks.

Yeah, I’d imagine such laws are easier to enforce in larger jurisdictions. A sugar drink ban in Texas would more likely to be successful than one in Rhode Island. And I hear Tennessee has all sorts of problems in this regard.

Yeah, the AT&T models work on StraightTalk, but the problem is that a sizable chunk of the iPhones floating on the used market are for Verizon and Sprint*, or they’re *stolen* and sold at high prices by fraudulent characters who prey on people who don’t know better.

*I suspect that that problem could happen with say the Galaxy SIII or the Nexus phones as they’re available for all carriers.

    Page Plus Wireless?

I dunno. If you’re looking for the latest and greatest, then the used market is either expensive or sketchy. However, if you’re looking a generation or two back, a lot of those are on the market simply because people upgraded.

So if I was looking to buy used, I’d be looking for an SII rather than an SIII.

In any event, at least on eBay you can reliably get one on the carrier you’re looking for. The only real concern – other than that it’s broke – is a bad ESN number from Verizon.

    Page Plus sounds right.
