George W. Bush is outpolling Mitt Romney? Seriously? Maybe they should have given Jeb a chance? (Actually, probably not: GWB’s numbers would probably be lower if he were not so safely displaced from running for anything.)

The Senate voted unanimously to shield US airlines from EU carbon reduction programs. The unanimity of this does not bode well for attempts at reducing carbon emissions.

Speaking of AGW, Tim Lee takes a look at media incompetence in covering the issue. In this case, a lazy reporter who “accidentally” overstated climate change’s damage by a factor of ten.

If you have an old car, or ride a motorcycle, or use a gas can for gasoline-powered mowers, refilling is about to get a lot more complicated.

A reason I’m glad I live in the west: This crap won’t fly. Maybe it ultimately won’t in New Jersey, either, but these sorts of things touch on multiple things I dislike (the War on Distracted Driving meets government-mandated pet-care meets making our lives more difficult one petty regulation at a time).

We don’t have alligators out here, but if we did, we’d probably even be okay with this. Granted, I don’t think I would get a gator for my child’s birthday party.

Women sometimes literally have men on the brain.

A plastic surgeon in Texas claims that he saved Obama’s life because “he had uncovered a plot to assassinate President Obama by a patient he was assessing. He reported that he contacted the FBI who then poisoned the patient.” … He is temporarily banned from practicing medicine.

LOL not only Nebraska, but Furnas County, population 4959. In the whole county. At least it ends somewhere interesting: Speedway. It is 804 miles and goes through 5 states, which is long for a 3 digit highway.

    New Jersey

This is one of these situations that causes inner conflict. On one hand it offends my libertarian sensibility. On the other I hate pets and their owners, and anything that makes their lives more difficult is fine by me.

Other NJ laws that cause inner conflict are the fact that we can’t pump our own gas and smoking is illegal in bars and restaurants. I am always taken aback when I eat out of state and the hostess asks: smoking or non-smoking?

Do people still get the joke in Airplane! when the ticket agent asks Ted Striker if he wants a smoking ticket?

I thought the late posting today meant the arrival of William Himmelreich Truman II.

Cool. When a person distracted by their dog causes an accident hits somebody, I hope that the victim is able to sue for damages. Either we’re going to have laws banning certain acts, or we’re going to have expensive lawsuits to cover the repercussions of those acts.

FWIW, New Jersey’s low gas taxes is probably why there isn’t much incentive by the public to remove the law. Had the taxes been set to New York’s level, there would be an argument that the price is high due to having the attendant, but as long as neighbouring states have higher prices without attendants, the only real argument that sells to the public is the convenience factor of pumping your own gas for some people. And while some people want to pump their own gas as it’s faster than waiting for the attendant, or in my case, it’s easier than dealing with the skells in places like Newark who pump gas for you, other people know that eliminating it means the elimination of most attendants, and there are plenty of people who *hate* pumping their own gas. From what I’ve seen, most stations around here don’t have any full service attendants.

I’m usually in the Northeast, and I’m not old enough to remember smoking areas in restaurants, so the idea of asking for smoking and non-smoking comes across as weird. Smokers can go outside to smoke, and then come back in to eat. Even the smokers that I know tend to hold off on eating and smoking at the same time at home.

Yeah, I noticed that. Kind of an interesting place for a highway to start.

I’m actually starting to do a double-take when I am in a place that allows smoking indoors. I’ve really been conditioned to go outside and smoke.

No baby, but the delay was because I was at the hospital for much of the day for the version (which, alas, was unsuccessful).

That’s generally how it works. “My dog distracted me” is not considered a civil defense.

That makes sense about New Jersey law. I am honestly a little surprised that there isn’t a market for having full service. I know people who hate, hate, hate it (and this correlates positively with the kind of people who can afford to pay more for gas). I guess not enough for stations to have a person on standby, though.

Back in the day, we always got “smoking tables” on cruise ships. People don’t really smoke and eat at the same time. The reason for allowing smoking in restaurants is for before and after the food. While waiting and chatting. Back when fast food places allowed smoking, there was an old lady in the corner who would smoke, drink her coffee, and do the crossword. Every Saturday. Then McDonald’s banned it (ahead of the city ban) and we’d find her at Happy Burger. Then Happy Burger did the same.

I didn’t know what this meant, so I looked it up.

Because of the ADA, someone MUST be available to assist a handicapped patron, but I guess they are so few-and-far-between that the clerk or some other employee just does double duty.

Yes I remember this as well. Burger King’s ashtrays had a Burger King logo at the bottom. I don’t know if this was a theft deterance system or just another way of advertising.

Oh, sorry. I thought you actually remembered my talking about the version in the previous post and the possibility that it would result in a delivery.

Honestly, if I were to steal an ashtray, I’d probably be more inclined to steal one with a fast food logo. I bet there are a lot of employees from about the time the bans started that have them in their houses.

Nope, I completely glanced over that part. Of course you would have no way of knowing that.

Well it is more interesting. I forgot to mention that these ashtrays had the logo stamped into them, rather than printed or using a sticker.

There was none. HTML error. (By which I mean I did not put the HTML into the post. Oops!)

Nope, I completely glanced over that part. Of course you would have no way of knowing that.

And here I was actually impressed that you remembered the significance of Tuesday. It looks like Attempt #2 will be next Tuesday.
