How siblings shape our personality.

Why cheap maple syrup tastes best. I had genuine maple syrup once. I thought it was disgusting.

Some einsteins are coming up with a laser powerful enough to tear apart the vacuum of space. What could possibly go wrong?

It’s actually somewhat hilarious to me that as Microsoft starts to put out really good browsers, it’s marketshare continues to decline. Maybe if they’d cared seven years ago?

Someone may need to save Save the Dolphins. Turns out, they’re kind of… animals.

Ethical people are happier. I wonder if this ties into religion? Also, disagreeable people have better credit scores. It pays to be an arse, apparently.

Okay, so maybe I was wrong and Apple products do need to be made in China. But will it cause us to lose our ability to design new problems? The article suggest so, but I’m not so sure. China may start also designing the things that we design, but we still design TV sets in the US. Beyond which, Chinese companies employ American designers.

People are shuffling out of science majors because… it’s hard. I knew a number of science majors in college, but only one science graduate. And that was after he dropped out and later went back.

This just won’t do. The real victims here have to be women who can’t find a man with a good enough paying job.

Well, to be specific, it pays to be parsimonious. But the article suggests that parsimony is the interaction between high conscientiousness and low agreeableness, a possibility I had not considered.

You have got to be kidding me.

As a commenter at the article suggests, here in Canada we don’t seem to categorize maple syrup in the same way:

    This is the Quebec system:

    http://www.siropderable.ca/Aff

Extra light, light, medium, and amber are ALL classified as No. 1

The syrup in my fridge (I just checked) was made in Quebec, and is apparently “Canada No. 1, Light”, but I have never paid any attention to this before now. It sure is good, though.

It does make you wonder how to square this with the stories about dolphins rescuing people, doesn’t it?

lol… this is especially interesting in light of the laser article you posted. I would absolutely love to have studied physics. The problem is that interesting physics is really, really math-intensive and difficult.

You really only knew one science major?

Sort of like how most people prefer strawberry and pineapple topping on their ice cream, rather than actual strawberrys and pineapples.

LOL That’s how the NYT would present the story. The WSJ plays it straight.

In all seriousness, women can’t expect to want a completely level playing field in the workplace and then have everyone marry someone who makes more than them. The math doesn’t work. Also, a double income couple screws over a no-income couple. Women who claim to want equality forget about their sisters whose husband can’t find a job.

People make fun of the old attitude of paying a man more because he has a family to support. I think it is 100 percent on the money.

Microsoft starts to put out really good browsers

How exactly do companies make money on web browsers? Or are they loss leaders?

    Fair enough.

Way too sweet. In an aftertasty sort of way.

It does make you wonder how to square this with the stories about dolphins rescuing people, doesn’t it?

    Hey yeah, that’s true.

You really only knew one science major?

Depends on if you count engineering, but either way the number is really low. The number who actually graduated, anyway.

    Exactly.

Also, a double income couple screws over a no-income couple. Women who claim to want equality forget about their sisters whose husband can’t find a job.

This assumes a fixed number of jobs.

How exactly do companies make money on web browsers? Or are they loss leaders?

The latter. Microsoft destroyed the notion that a browser was something to be paid for.

    I’m a maple syrup convert.

I used to feel that way about maple syrup, as well. I grew up with the fake stuff, and that’s what I liked…until I moved up north and started making my own.

Until then, I didn’t know syrup had distinct flavors. Best I can tell, I was producing Grade A light, which had a super delicate flavor. We used that syrup for gifts and all our sweetening needs, and over time, through tasting other syrup to compare to mine, I came around on the darker maple syrups, too, and use different types for different things.

I no longer live in the house with the sugar maples. Last year I sugared the maples we do have, but it’s not the same. Instead, I buy small containers of syrup in various grades from local producers, including a semi-local high school 4-H program. I don’t think I’ll ever go back to the fake stuff.

Isn’t the fake stuff just corn syrup?

    FLAVORED corn syrup.
