Junk science is inadmissible in court, but junk economics is a-ok. Of course, economists in general have more to prove at this point than scientists…

A study shows that schools perform better without collective bargaining. Since it confirms my biases, I am going to agree with the findings and completely overlook the fact that there do not appear to have been any SES controls whatsoever.

The always-fun topic of lottery winners and bankrupcy. While winning the lottery doesn’t appear to solve their financial problems, it doesn’t appear to create them, either. Basically, they’re the kind of people that go bankrupt anyway.

I recently wrote about SSD drives. Farhad Manjoo recently wrote about the same thing. As came up in the comments section, this is something that Amiga was doing 15 years ago.

It may be good to be king, but it’s dangerous to be king.

Even goats are good for something.

I’m still debating whether I will be leaving Windows Mobile for Android of Windows Phone 7. This may be another indication that I won’t have a choice.

North Dakota looks finally ready to buckle on the Indian mascot issue (written about here and here). In the end, they really didn’t have a choice.

I’ve seen the goats at work in downtown Los Angeles. The kid in the story is right — they are cute. And useful, too. It’s easy to forget, especially in a highly-urban, intensely-developed environment like downtown L.A., how much we rely on our animals.

And as for Phoenix Jones, I’ve got two words: Kick. Ass.

Yet another example of the NCAA as Barney Fife and why college sports are silly.

The Washington Redskins play near our nation’s capital, and won’t change their name. Good for them. Although, if push came to shove, Tony Kornheiser suggests they can change their logo to a redskin potato.

I was actually talking to a neighbor about the goat story recently. Apparently, there is a guy around here who has a side-business of leasing his goat out to people who own horses in residential areas. They’re great at cleaning up after horses. Does that mean they eat horse crap? Or something to do with the hay? Not sure.

Meh. I think that there was something to be done here, but I think the NCAA’s handling of it left a lot to be desired.

Really? They *really* didn’t have a choice? Maybe I’ve withdrawn too far from the real world in recent months. “Fighting Sioux” is like the best name (and corresponding image) I’ve heard for any sports team in a long time.

Look for goats to become an increasingly popular form of livestock in coming years as America slides slowly into second-world status.

Well, they had a choice just like everybody always has the choice of committing suicide. The sanctions the NCAA plans to apply means that nobody (certainly no big name) will play them, no conference will have them, and their athletics department withers away. I do not see how their athletics program survives outside a handful of scrimmages against Division II, Division III, and NAIA games against teams that literally cannot find another opponent.

I say this as someone who thinks that UND met what should have been a reasonable threshold (the approval of one of the state’s Sioux tribes) to keep their name. But regardless of what they think is fair, and what I think is fair, the penalty is just too stiff.
