Toyota says plural of Prius is “Prii”:

The world can now rest easy. Toyota has officially embraced “Prii” as the plural of Prius. The Japanese automaker made the announcement over the weekend at the 2011 Chicago Auto Show after inviting the public at large to vote for the phrase that best fit the company’s new gaggle of hybrids. The voting kicked off on January 10th at the Detroit Auto Show, and while Priuses, Prius, Prium and Prien all surfaced as possibilities, Prii took home the majority of votes with 25 percent of the more than 1.8 million ballots cast.

And the plural for the people who actually use the word “Prii” is “douche bags.”

    Not Priicks, Peter?;)

That is really, really, annoying. I wonder if the press will actually accommodate them.

I’m not one to talk, because I have to try to stop myself from calling the singular Pry-us. But my main problem is that Prii rolls off the tongue like an anvil. If we’re going to go with pseudo-latin, Pria sounds better. Priuses sounds goofy, too, though.

What’s the plural of the Nintendo Wii? Wiii, Wiiinus, Wiini?

  5. stone says:

I don’t think Priuses sounds at all goofy. This is what we do in English (at least in American) — we add an s to pluralize. Virus, plural viruses. And I’ve always just said “Wiis.”

Yeah, but when it sounds odd we sometimes make exceptions to avoid the *ses. Geese. Moose. But not in other cases like buses or, well, cases. Though I do hate the spelling of the word that should be spelled busses.

    Good one, Peter.
