I think that the trend that for kids to be happy the parents must be happy is a little too self-satisfying to be entirely accurate and thus is taken as a license to do whatever you want (and, sometimes, tear a family apart). However, if parents are miserable and lonely that is going to bleed over into their children’s lives. Besides which, having two parents in the household (in the event that dating leads to remarriage) is still, often, going to be better than one. Depending, of course, on the quality of the step-parent.

When I first read about a State House candidate in the DC suburbs in Maryland lying about having played for the Dallas Cowboys, I assumed that he was hiding the fact that he played for the Redskins’ arch-rival. I was wrong.
Mark Kleimann supports the legalization of pot but opposes the legal sale of pot. One of the ironies of the pro-pot movement hating tobacco companies has always been that tobacco companies would almost certainly be the first and primary entrants into the cannibis market. Kleimann does not actually believe this to be so (Why the heck not?! Their stellar reputation?! Their impeccable morals?! I would be really interested to know his rationale.), but considers corporate America getting its grubby hands on it problematic enough. Maybe there’s something to what he’s saying as a good in-between legalization and prohibition, but I have to wonder if a drug market that the vast majority of people don’t have access to is ultimately going to solve the crime problems associated with Mary Jane. In some med-only states, the partial availability has actually caused quite a bit of crime as those that don’t have access to the ostensibly legal product do what they have to do to get it.
It’ll be interesting to see how Apple’s 99c TV-rental service goes. For some people, it’ll definitely be cheaper than cable. However, I can’t imagine it will actually destroy cable unless they can offer sporting events. It’s funny how some of the same people that freak out when Internet providers start tiering their service are also irate that cable providers and content providers go with the all-you-can-eat system (with all-you-can-eat pricing, of course). My main concern, though, is that cable has been the source of much good TV that people watch because they can in order to pay extra… but who is going to pay 99c to rent a TV show that they’ve never seen? Apple may well succeed her, but possibly at the detriment of the wide variety of available options we now have.
The subject of urban (and non-urban, for that matter) decay and crime has been a particular interest on Hit Coffee as of late, so in that spirit a look at the Detroit.

I don’t like Jet Blue’s policy of hiring retired cops and firefighters. Yes, they might be more effective in emergency situations, though that’s a matter of speculation, but the bigger fact is that they’re drawing fat pensions after retiring at disgustingly young ages. It’s better to hire people who actually need to work.
In this economy, that’s a really good point.
Of course single parents should be allowed to date. As a child, would I want to deal with an adult who wasn’t getting any? “Dr” Laura is being quite unreasonable. Ask any teacher or coach what the results of the children-first, high-self-esteem movement are…
Regarding stepparents, especially stepfathers, subjecting children to them is generally the worst thing you can do for them. You are marrying a man who had to settle for a single mom. Generally speaking, a man willing to marry a single mom is no prize himself. Also, men can barely stand their own children. You think they are going to stand yours? Yeah, right… You don’t have to look very far on the interent to find stories of child abuse where the perp is either the stepfather or mom’s boyfriend. An exception could be made if you are marrying a man with children of his own.
Of course, none of this applies for single dads. Plenty of women are willing to marry them just so they can have an instant family. It doesn’t make the woman a loser.

I don’t blame the airlines for this. It makes total sense for them to hire someone experienced who they don’t have to pay as much because of their pension. It needs to be handled at the governmental level. Maybe for every $2 earned, the pension gets reduced by $1…

So you want the parents to get laid but not remarry? I think that is the first time I ever heard that position :).
By and large, most mothers that divorce tend to marry fathers in my (admittedly white and upper middle class) observation.

So if your spouse dies, you might as well throw yourself on the funeral pyre.
My theory is that Dr. Laura got away with a lot of crap because of all the unhappy divorced people who are angry with the *other* parent, and they liked to think of her criticisms as applying to their exes.
I wish people would remember that not every single parent ends up that way because they made a bad choice.

Yeah, I heard of a case like that once. This guy was 27 and had a flourishing, lucrative career as a county surveyor. Plus, he was in line to inherit a lot of valuable land from his dad. He’d also done some time in the military and had impressed the higher-ups with his character, bravery, and resolve.
With all that going for him, he “settled” for a widow with two kids, who was close to a year older than he was, and actually adopted the kids as his own! What a beta loser.
Guy by the name of Washington. Never amounted to much, after “settling” for that “aging” single. I believe he made his biggest splash as an engraver’s model — in fact, you might be carrying a picture of him in your wallet.
