Anyone have any brand and model HDTVs to endorse? It’s kind of high on our list of things to get when the money starts rolling in (don’t worry, a big chunk of it is going right into savings). I’m looking for somewhere in the ballpark of 32″ to 42″. That’s a big ballpark, I know. I’m indecisive. Extra points for TVs with good 180 degree visibility and particularly for TVs with minimum glare as the TV will be facing a window.

I like my 42″ Vizio. I’m not sure of the model number. It has a 120hz scan rate, which is only half as fast as some of the new ones, but even with this blurring doesn’t seem to be a problem. It cost me about $1,000 at Wal-Mart.
I don’t know what to tell you about glare though. I don’t think there is a tv made that can look all that good if it’s facing a window. (Also, what if you want to watch porn on it?) Save some money for curtains!
My Sony 50″ works really well. Doubt I would have bought a Sony if not for store credit and getting the display unit (that they kindly put a brand new lamp in before handing off to me) though.
ANY larger-screen TV is going to have glare issues if you have the window right behind you. I would suggest a thick or maybe even “blackout” type curtain for the window. Besides, curtains are cheap!
The TV isn’t facing an unblocked window. But the sun gets through the curtains and disturbs the CRT. I am hoping that curtains+LCD will be enough to make it a non-issue if the LCD is less glarey. That’s how it worked upstairs in Cascadia. My CRT was actually unwatchable during the day, but my LCD was only mildly disturbed. In Callie the CRT is mildly disturbed, so I’m hoping an LCD will be close to perfect.
In Estacado we hung a dark blue shower curtain over the window facing the TV. That was neat, though that’s not going to fly in a room facing the street.
So why not hang a blackout curtain (or shower curtain) on the inside, behind a “normal looking” window shade or curtain? Nobody from the street would be able to tell.
Mostly cause it’s a pain in the rear to take up and put down. In Estacado I just left it up because it faced another house and was in a room that Clancy did not frequent.
