AOL Auto has a list of the cars least likely to get a speeding ticket. Unsurprisingly, most of them were family cars or pick-ups. What I found interesting was that of the four that weren’t either of these things, only one was an inexpensive car, the Mazda6. The other two were pricier Buicks (Lucerne and Park Avenue) and the last was a Jaguar. For the Buicks, I guess you have a lot of older drivers (though I’ve never associated Buick with advanced age the same was as, say, Lincolns). But Jags? I thought those things were bought by people that liked to drive fast.

Four door Jags with big engines tend to be the province of older customers who prefer British luxury over that of German marques. The market for European rocketsleds is basically in the hands of the Germans with their respective higher end sport models.

My father had a jaguar once. They are the world’s most expensive lawn ornaments. The average Jag can’t be driven long enough to get a ticket.

Expensive sports sedans tend to be purchased by older, financially successful men. Such men tend not to have lead feet.

Interesting. I knew that about some luxury models, such as Lincolns, Oldsmobiles, and to a lesser extent Cadallacs. I tended to put those European luxury cars (including Jags) in a different category. Guess that was my bad.

From a movie… Jaguar: for men who like to get blow-jobs from beautiful women they hardly know.

  6. stone says:

Everyone I’ve ever known with a Jaguar was a woman over 35. Women are safer drivers.

I was going to comment on all the speeding tickets you and yours keep getting. From your posts, you seem to be a family of leadfoots.

I think its funny, that you apparently did research on what to drive to attempt to avoid tickets. Just keep your speed within 5 mph of the limit, and you should be fine. I’ve been doing that for 26 years, and have yet to receive a ticket.

Kirk, I ran across it surfing. I wouldn’t buy a car on the basis that it’s less likely to get me speeding tickets. Though I might be less inclined to choose the color of car mythologically most inclined to invite them.

Kirk, forget the lead foot thing. Try uranium. 😀

A friend of mine knows cars and loves to drive them, fast. His car: an Audi S-4, which is essentially the small A-4 sedan with a huge V-8 engine under the hood. That’s the way to go for a lead foot: big engine, small car.

“Kirk, forget the lead foot thing. Try uranium.”

Stumbled on an interesting presentation on one of the CSPANs a year or two ago: a scientist or engineer was showing a comparison of high speed X-Ray photos of a depleted uranium sabot round penetrating the armor of a tank versus a steel one. The DU one retained its cylindrical shape and penetrated much deeper; the steel round compressed and flattened on impact. The presentation was in response to critics of DU ammo.

Anyone else here old enough to have driven during the 55 mph speed limit? I never had a problem staying at 60. Now I get blown off the road even if I’m doing 70.

When I was on my way to prom, a cop car lit up behind me. I freaked out and slowed down, preparing to pull over and get my ticket. The cop car started getting agitated, whooping and flashing at me. I muttered to myself that I was getting over as fast as I could, but it was hard when nobody else was obeying the speed limit, either.

When I finally changed lanes, he whisped right by me. It was only then that I remembered that the speed limits had just been raised nationally from 55 to 70. The cop was getting agitated because while he was trying to catch him a speeder, he was stuck behind a car going 15mph below the speed limit.

Speed limits out west go up to 75. In west Texas they’re experimenting with 80. I long to drive that stretch someday.

We still have 55 mph speed limits in most of this state, though it’s 65 (with fines doubled) in rural areas. Cars average about 70 though without traffic, faster on the southern half of the turnpike.

  14. trumwill says:

Colosse raised their speed limits to 65 at the time (the aforementioned prom was in the boonies). Then the feds forced Colosse County and the surrounding counties to lower it to 55mph for environmental reasons. The idiot and cowardly mayor at the time, Ron Washington, didn’t even push back. The Governor and the State’s Attorney did, though. The SA basically said that they would not prosecute anyone that goes under 70mph (because their job is to enforce public safety, not environmental law) and the Governor fought back. It was raised to 60 and 65 depending on where you were in the city.

When the Gov and SA said they’d do it, I thought they were doomed and said that if they accomplished that they would win my vote (I voted for neither the previous time around). I held my nose and, with a fair amount of self-loathing voted for each of them for the first and last time.
