The teacher shortage may be making a comeback.

Most sheriffs and police chiefs are on board with concealed carry. Granted, most serve over rural areas (Los Angeles County and Beaverhead County each get one sheriff) and that skews the numbers.

Maybe WASP values had their place, and we’re less than we could be without them.

We’ll have to pass the bill before we know what’s in it, of course, but some are concerned that Hillary Clinton’s tuition plan may backfire.

The people of Windsor, Canada, are living with an unpleasant sound possibly coming from an industrial island, but no one is sure what to do about it.

It doesn’t take much to impact people’s beliefs towards the non-existence of climate change. Also, how repeated falsehoods become truths.

As much as I dislike and find-depressing Brutalist architecture, I have to admit the concept of “Brutalist” websites is interesting.

(And I wonder: are those “ugly” websites more compatible with things like screenreaders for the disabled?)

though I will say, in my bleaker moods lately, I wonder if Brutalism in everything isn’t what we’re heading for. I would argue the old-school generic food items have a Brutalist aesthetic (which I remember from my childhood: plain white or yellow packaging with the name of the item, e.g., ROLLED OATS printed on it in a plain black font).

Sheriff deputies (& state troopers) tend to be a lot more relaxed about CCW holders as well. It’s the city cops that think (mistakenly) that every gun is pointing at them.

It makes sense, if a person goes through the process, even if it’s just an application process, to get a permit, that person probably has enough respect for the law to not be killing a cop during a simple contact. It’s not a perfect gauge, but it has value.

  3. Michael Cain says:

The Colorado sheriff’s association gave up on publicly endorsing policies when they figured out that the sheriffs for the ten big (and one smaller) Front Range counties (of 64 total) represented almost 85% of the population of the state and often had a different (urban/suburban) agenda than the rural sheriffs. About the time that happened, there were rumors around the Capitol that the Front Range sheriffs had threatened to withdraw their memberships.

The whole young men/video games thing strikes me as a somewhat elegant solution.

Subsidize VR goggles and we can probably get away with housing them in something much closer to a dormitory. (Set up a cafeteria on one of the main floors and you can get away with not needing to provide kitchens either.)

After that, you just need soma. They’re out of the way and we don’t have to worry about them siring children.

Probably a lot cheaper than prison, too.

  5. Plinko says:

I think the interesting axis on the CCW is really more reflective of evolved thinking on conceal vs. open rather than urban/rural these days now that ban isn’t a viable preference for them.

Not complaining because free, but this is a rerun from a week or two ago, isn’t it?

  7. SFG says:

Never had a problem with WASP values. They built the country, after all. If I go to France, I will drink wine, watch boring movies, and do my level best to act French, even though I know I won’t fool anyone.
