Ordinarily, I wouldn’t spend an hour watching a TV show about Dukes of Hazzard, but things just kind of fell into place for it.

It really is interesting the relationship CBS had with ruralia. Shows in rural America were very, very successful for the network, and they always seemed unhappy about it.

It’s not too much unlike Fox’s relationship with Married With Children. Very successful show that Fox always seemed more embarrassed about than proud of.

There is interesting history about the relationship between CBS and the rural shows. Google up the “Rural Purge” for more information about the cancellation of popular shows to try and target a different, presumably more profitable and younger, demographic. My understanding is that CBS to this day still has an audience that skews older than the others, but I don’t know if that is true, or whether it was really a holdover from the early 70s. That would be cool, though.

For those who haven’t watched the whole things (which is probably most of you), you can go to 28:25 on the video where they talk expressly about the relationship between CBS and DoH and rural programming.

Yeah, pretty sure I’m not going to watch that whole thing. I think the Dukes of Hazzard was well after the Rural Purge (because I actually remember it being on TV), but I guess the network got over that and was willing to put on country oriented TV.
