How elite Asian students are cheating on US college applications. There is, apparently, a booming industry around this.

Ever since a childhood fixation with Atlantis, I’ve been fascinated with the concept of lost cities.

Would Americans be healthier if they spent more on food? I think Doug makes a really good point here that in some ways it’s the availability of food rather than cost. Even if natural food is better, and even if it weren’t more expensive, it would still be less convenient. In my more severe moments, I consider the war on salt to primarily be a war on convenient foods. Not as a byproduct, but as the point of the proposed ban. Meanwhile, the problem with blaming food deserts.

The court case that almost made it illegal to tape TV shows.

Bill Gates has saved six million lives since 2007. He’s spent $28 billion from his fortune. That makes a lot of money per life saved if all of it were going to live-saving. But I don’t think that’s the case. I would be interested in a breakdown of how much his life-saving efforts have cost per life saved.

Los Angeles is apparently the favorite destination for Europeans looking to move to the US.

The top 1% of mobile users account for 50% of the world’s wireless bandwidth. Meanwhile, 5% of Americans make up 50% of health care spending.

This puts a cramp on my designs of putting an NFL team in Riverside.

The inbreeding coefficient of superheroes. Meanwhile, superheroes in Salt Lake City! And lastly, the favorite superheroes of Republican politicians. Any of them who names Ted Kord has my vote. Okay, not really.

I suspect it may partially be due to a weird mix of Europeans looking for that Southern California lifestyle along with those trying to make their way in “Hollywood”. In contrast, why New York is somewhat more amenable to the European lifestyle, the winter and summer weather is actually worse than much of Europe. Plus, I suspect that there are opportunity costs to longer flights or two-flight segments needed to fly to LAX from European airports.

It’s admittedly interesting to see that the list is dominated by warm weather locales in Southern California and Florida. Although, it you expand the list a bit more, you get more Southern locales, but they’re lacking in terms of popularity compared to the top three.

    Samson, I’ll pass it on.

David, I’m not sure I understand your comment. That’s all reasoning as to why they would go to NY and lot LA?

That was my half-assed attempt to explain why Europeans would prefer LA and its environs over say New York City and to a lesser extent other areas.

Samson, Phi has removed the captcha from his site for the time being. I had the same problem, but my comment went up.

David, I’m just confused because your reasoning would seem to be endorsing NY over LA. So I’m missing something. Unless you’re saying that they want to get as far away from Europe as possible?

To a certain extent, yes, plus there’s the bonus of not trying to fit into New York’s social classes…

Regarding the Asian student falsification of academic portfolios: my expectation would be that, to the extent high school academic portfolios predict college success, that Asian students would underperform academically in college compared to what their falsified scores would predict. But the article doesn’t address this.

I sponsored an Asian foreign exchange student at the university where I once taught. He was a no-kidding polymath, totally dominating every subject he touched.
