You’ve got to give BYU credit for putting their basketball program where their mouth is:

Brandon Davies was dismissed from BYU’s basketball team after he admitted to having sexual relations with his girlfriend, the Salt Lake Tribune reported Wednesday.

BYU’s honor code forbids students from having premarital sex and instructs them to “live a chaste and virtuous life.”

The newspaper reported that Davies met with school officials on Monday.

BYU officials would only confirm Wednesday that Davies wasn’t involved in anything criminal that resulted in his dismissal from the team.

BYU is currently ranked #3 and so they have a lot on the line. They lost their first post-Davies game.

I think I mentioned this, but I have a former coworker that was kicked out of BYU for having sex with a local bishop’s daughter. He hated it there and so it was two birds killed with a single stone. His parents didn’t see it that way though.

Don’t worry about the athlete. He’ll surely get a transfer with a nice scholarship to some public university whose attitude is “If she consents, we don’t much care what you do at night. Just put the rock in the hoop.”

I’m not sure if “admire” is the word I’d use for BYU; I note that they are sticking to their guns and their avowed ethics in this case, which is admirable at one level. I note the consistency, which is… refreshing.

But if you think those ethics are foolish and misguided to begin with, is it really possible to admire someone for sticking to them?

  2. stone says:

    Wow.

I wonder how they found out?

My main worry about this policy is that it’s open tosuch uneven enforcement. Basically, if you have sex, make sure none of your enemies find out about it.

  3. web says:

I also wonder the question of (a) how they found out and (b) who made a bit deal of it.

Remembering the long tradition of Mormon bigotry (they weren’t even allowed into the church until 1978), and finding out that Davies’ girlfriend “happens” to be white… let’s just say the “face value” of the situation leaves a lot of questions to be answered.

I also wonder how they found out? Bugged the guy’s apartment?

I don’t really wonder at all how they found out about it. Most likely, somebody didn’t keep their mouth shut. Or else someone walked in on them and reported them. At BYU, this sort of thing is going to be a big deal. It’s not Pensacola Christian College, but it’s also not a normal university.

TL, I’m not sure I would use the word “admire.” I’d put it somewhere between “respect” and “admire.” I agree that the athlete will be fine. At least financially. If he’s Mormon himself, it’s probably embarrassing. But he can transfer or (because unlike the NFL, the NBA lets you play for money after only one year out of high school) try to go pro.

Web, minor correction: blacks have been allowed into the church for quite some time. What they (mostly) couldn’t do until 1978 was hold a leadership position within the church or participate in temple ceremonies.

  8. Abel says:

@web How did they find out? He turned himself in. Who made a big deal of it? The media.

The fact that is gf was white (was she? I don’t even know if the gf has been identified) wasn’t an issue. The LDS church really doesn’t care about the race of the person you marry.

    And Will’s correction is correct.

  9. trumwill says:

He turned himself in? That I had not heard.

  10. Brandon Berg says:

That doesn’t say he turned himself in, just that he acknowledged it. That doesn’t mean he was the one who brought it up in the first place.

  11. Abel says:

Do a google search, Brandon. He’s admitted that he turned himself in.

    What a nut.
